The second annual Star Wars Days is taking place at Gar-field High School in Woodbridge, VA. This year, expect more artists, vendors, and workshops! Art Way Alliance will be there with workshops throughout the entire weekend!

Principles of Animation Merit Badge Class

11am to 1pm
 
Counselors will provide a tutorial on how to plan a brief animation using thumbnail sketches and/or layout drawings. Scouts will choose and define 5 of the 12 principles of animation. Students will then discuss the best practices and merits of these established rules. Ultimately, students will discover, learn, and apply the following principles:  squash and stretch, anticipation, staging, straight-ahead action and pose to pose, follow through and overlapping action, slow in and slow out, arcs, secondary action, timing, exaggeration, solid drawing, and appeal. (Prerequisites: Scouts will choose, define and write down in their own words 5 of the 12 principles of animation.) – Hosted by Jimmy Horner & Jake Heagy

 Drawing Droids

1pm to 2pm
 
From R2-D2 to BB-8, the droids of the Star Wars universe are as memorable as their human counterparts. Artist Keir Lyle hosts a panels showing how to use basic lines and shapes to draw even the most complicated of characters. Come design your own original droids that are fit for adventures in a galaxy far, far away...

Demystifying Digital Art

 2pm to 3pm
 
Description: Are you interested in digital art but don’t know where to begin? This workshop will go over what you need to start creating your own digital art. From hardware to software, tools and techniques, we’ll discuss it all. And we’ll debunk some of the myths surrounding digital art too. Hosted by Liz Staley

Drawing Action with the FORCE

 3pm to 4pm
 
Do your characters sometimes feel flat or stiff? Join Darren Soto as he guides you to creating dynamic action poses and perspectives with some of your favorite Star Wars characters. Give depth to your drawings of heroes like Luke Skywalker or villains like Darth Vader while keeping in mind their body type, personalities, and connection to the FORCE.

The Basics of Animation

11pm to 12pm

Come learn the basics of animation from experienced artists, Jimmy Horner and Jake Heagy. Using only a pencil and post-it notes, students will create standard animation cycles including, but not limited to, a bouncing ball and the walk cycle.
 

VFX (Visual Effects)

12pm to 1pm
 
Sit back while Multimedia Professional Matthew Huston breaks down the illusions within the world of visual effects. In this lesson Matthew will demonstrate “Compositing,” a fun and interesting effect that combines visual elements from separate sources into a single image.
 
Compositing is essential for a variety of media and layout designs. Matthew will show examples of finished composited pieces from multiple mediums before discussing basic compositing steps with a simple tutorial.

Drawing Jedi and Sith Kids Workshop

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Come learn how to turn some of your favorite Star Wars characters into rambunctious kids with Ben Pereira. Discover environment, poses, and everything needed to give these kids the same look and feel as their adult counterparts.

COMIC BOOK TOOLS & TECHNIQUES: INKING

2pm to 3pm

Ever wonder how to use line weight and shading to add more depth and definition to your images? Have a seat and watch Artist Paolo Galang as he teaches the inking tools and techniques that help any image take shape.

Choosing Colors for Sci-fi Environments

 3pm to 4pm
 
Description: Professional cartoonist and 2D animator IIsa Tang How will be your guide to creating and coloring your own original Sci-Fi environments. Explore layouts and lighting. IIsa will also explore color theory and show how to portray mood, create with a light source, and utilize colors that work and blend together to best convey the setting of your story.
