Artist Check In: Dennis Johnson

Hello There Creative Companions!

The world is changing, and at times that can be scary, but I’m trying to look to these times as an opportunity to better myself! For me that means a lot of self reflection and art making. Creating art has always been a way for me to decompress and a tool to make sense of the world.

Lately, I have been reflecting on the importance of art to our culture and image as human beings. Things like color, medium, symbolism, and intention all matter. And I have come to the conclusion that art is a lens for us all to study the world.

Art consists of patterns just like the world around us. It could be the repetitive molecular structure of a crystal or the repetitive lines in a carefully crosshatched piece of ink work. Artists seem to be the people that identify and call attention to those patterns. Artists also tend to be the individuals who enjoy breaking patterns to investigate new ideas or ways of living. Art isn’t just about pictures or dance moves or how a beautiful plate of food tastes. Art is the amalgamation of the creator’s feelings and all the raw materials necessary to create the art work.

Ahhh… I seemed to have gotten off topic.

Currently I’m working on a few Super Smash Brothers Ultimate commissions. I’m also working on a story with my partner about a group of kids growing up in a slightly supernatural suburb.

Hopefully, when we all see each other again, we will be able to share our work and support each other. Until then KEEP DRAWING!!!
